The Importance of Sober Friendships in Recovery

Creating a viable sober living environment is essential for anyone in early recovery; and sober friendships are an invaluable asset in any sober living environment. During this critical time, finding guidance among peers and professionals with substantial sobriety experience can provide a safe haven of support while navigating life without drugs or alcohol. These relationships are not only important during early recovery but also throughout the entire journey as they help strengthen resilience while preventing relapse episodes. In this blog post, we’ll take an in-depth look at why sober companionship is an integral part of any sustainable addiction treatment program and how it provides tangible benefits along the path to recovery.

The Benefits of Sober Companionship

Sober companionship can be helpful during the recovery process for a number of reasons. The benefits of having a friend or mentor who is navigating their own recovery journey include:

  • Providing practical support
  • Participating in healthy sober activities
  • Navigating challenges that may arise
  • Providing accountability
  • Offering guidance and encouragement
  • Serving as a positive role model in helping individuals build new, healthy habits and routines.

How Hazelbrook Sober Living Fosters a Sober Lifestyle Through Relationships

We understand the benefits of surrounding our residents with other individuals who are on the recovery journey. We foster these sober relationships in a variety of ways.

  1. Peer Recovery Coaches
We offer a strong Peer Recovery Coaching  program where individuals who are in long-term recovery themselves become a mentor to new people coming into Hazelbrook. These certified coaches have over 30 hours of training. Most come into the individual homes to work one-on-one or by running group coaching sessions.
  2. Daily House Meetings
We have required meetings daily at each of our houses. This sets aside the time for the residents to celebrate wins, discuss difficulties; but most importantly build a sense of community.
  3. Sober Outings and Events
At Hazelbrook, we like to have fun. Whether it is an individual house choosing to go bowling or cook dinner together; or getting together for a Hazelbrook Community Center event such as the Ugly Sweater Holiday Party or our Oktoberfest, it is important to create fun experiences that happen without drugs or alcohol involved.
  4. Giving Back to the Community
When we give to others in need, it gives a sense of happiness and pleasure. When done with others, it builds a special bond between the group. Many of our homes foster the friendships of the residents by choosing to volunteer at various organizations and events around town.

The Recovery Journey Should Never Be Traveled Alone

At Hazelbrook, we believe there is strength in numbers when it comes to walking the journey of recovery. Having someone who can provide accountability and encouragement, help navigate challenges, and celebrate wins is crucial in building a sober lifestyle. Through our Peer Coaching programs, organized and impromptu events, daily house meetings, and volunteer opportunities our residents have the opportunity to foster sober friendships that will help them build a fulfilling sober life.
