Hazelbrook Recovery Services is a Colorado-based, mission-driven organization providing recovery, clinical, and community-based support to individuals navigating substance use, mental health, and reentry challenges. Founded in 2016, Hazelbrook was built on the belief that lasting recovery requires structure, dignity, accountability, and consistent human connection.

Today, Hazelbrook operates a comprehensive continuum of care that includes recovery programming, sober living, clinical services, community support, and justice-involved reentry initiatives. Through partnerships with state agencies and correctional systems, Hazelbrook delivers ethical, trauma-informed peer support designed to promote long-term stability and reduce recidivism.

This position supports a newly launching DOC-funded program, offering the opportunity to contribute to program development while delivering meaningful, hands-on impact.

About the Role

The Peer Support Specialist – DOC Program provides structured peer support services to justice-involved individuals within correctional and parole-related settings. This role requires professionalism, strong boundaries, and comfort working alongside DOC staff and law enforcement.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of an extensive DOC background clearance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Peer Support Delivery: Facilitate peer-led group sessions and provide one-on-one support focused on recovery, accountability, and successful community reentry.
  • Reentry & Life Skills Coaching: Support participants with employment readiness, housing referrals, budgeting, education access, and daily life skills.
  • Program Screening & Intake Support: Assist with intake screening to assess readiness and appropriate placement within Hazelbrook or external treatment programs.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Coordinate with Case Managers, Parole Officers, deputies, and Hazelbrook leadership to ensure aligned, ethical care.
  • Resource Navigation: Connect participants with community-based mental health, recovery, educational, and employment resources.
  • Documentation & Billing Compliance: Complete timely documentation and meet weekly billing and reporting requirements.
  • Professional Representation: Maintain high professional standards while representing Hazelbrook within DOC facilities and government environments.

Must Have

  • Certification: CCAR Peer Recovery Coach certification (minimum); COPA or NAADAC preferred or in progress
  • Recovery Standing: Minimum of two (2) years of abstinent recovery
  • DOC Background Eligibility: Ability to pass an extensive government background check, including:
    • No sex offenses
    • No introduction of contraband offenses
    • Not currently on parole or probation
    • No ignition interlock device requirement
    • No open cases or warrants
    • Good standing with the IRS
    • No close personal or intimate relationships with currently incarcerated individuals or individuals on active supervision
    • Ability to pass UA testing
  • Insurance: Active malpractice insurance
  • Group Facilitation: Experience leading or co-facilitating groups (peer, recovery, educational, or similar)
  • Professional Communication: Comfort working with DOC staff, parole officers, deputies, and law enforcement with professionalism and respect
  • Technology Skills: Proficiency with Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs), professional email communication, and documentation systems
  • Transportation: Reliable vehicle with ability to travel within assigned regions
  • Ethical Standards: Strong boundaries and commitment to Hazelbrook’s ethical guidelines
  • Capacity: Availability that does not conflict with other Hazelbrook roles or compromise quality of care

Nice to Have

  • Lived experience with incarceration or extensive experience working with justice-involved populations
  • Prior experience in residential treatment, sober living, or reentry programs
  • Familiarity with prison entry, reentry processes, and parole requirements
  • Trauma-informed care experience
  • Previous work in detox or acute treatment settings
  • Strong interest in professional development and continued learning

Location + Hours

  • Location: In-person throughout the Denver metro area
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday availability required
    • No weekends or holidays (government schedule)
  • Hours: 20–40 hours per week, based on program needs and candidate availability

Compensation

  • 1099 Contract Position
  • $21.00–$24.50 per hour, depending on experience and credentials

ADDICTION COUNSELOR

About the Role:

  • Therapeutic – Serve in group or individual settings for clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders
  • Personalized – Conduct substance use and mental health assessments for new clients
  • Collaborative – Coordinate with other clinical staff, peer coaches and community partners to meet the unique needs of each client
  • Compliant – Maintain awareness, understanding, and compliance with all policies/procedures, memos, emergent issues/needs, behavioral, safety plans or special monitoring

Expected Outcomes:

Within 15 Days

  • Complete clinician training and develop EHR proficiency
  • Build strong rapport with clinical team and Hazelbrook staff
  • Begin scheduling BPS’ and service plans on own timeline

Within 30 Days

  • Experience more confidence in documentation, EHR proficiency, and team dynamics
  • Complete evaluations in a timely and professional manner
  • Lead therapy sessions with daily consistency and quality (if providing therapy sessions)
  • Thorough understanding and maintenance of required documentation

Within 45 Days

  • Demonstrate increased confidence, independence, and consistency
  • Demonstrate a pattern of quality care and ongoing professional development

Must Have:

  • Must be able to practice in Colorado with minimum CAS, LACC, LPCC.  (Prefer LCSW, LMFT, LPC, LAC)
  • Must be registered with DORA
  • Technology and private space for telehealth options

  • If a candidate is in recovery themselves, we require a minimum of 3 years of abstinence from drugs and alcohol to be eligible for this position
  • Demonstrate ability to provide comprehensive and ongoing assessment resulting in appropriate treatment at the multiple levels of care provided at Hazelbrook
  • Ability to perform clinical assessments and develop strengths-based, client centered treatment plans
  • Continually monitor progress and re-evaluate appropriateness of goals

CASE MANAGER

      • Conduct mental health and substance abuse evaluations and provide appropriate referrals to treatment providers
      • Conduct comprehensive housing assessments and develop personalized plans for clients to secure stable housing
      • Identify potential crises and implement interventions to prevent harm to high-risk individuals
  • Client Support
      • Provide ongoing support to clients, including emotional and practical support, advocacy, and assistance with accessing resources
      • Arrange and provide transportation for clients to attend appointments, access resources, and participate in treatment programs
      • Collaborate with clients to establish achievable goals and objectives within their treatment plans, ensuring that all relevant issues are addressed
  • Outreach and Partnerships
    • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations and stakeholders to increase awareness of our services and establish partnerships
    • Ensure transparency and effective communication with the justice system, including courts and probation officers, as needed
    • Foster relationships with leaders within partnering agencies to facilitate seamless service coordination and delivery.

PEER RECOVERY COACH

About the Role:

One-on-One Coaching

  • Providing individualized coaching for personal development needs such as financial wellness, job applications, obtaining driver's licenses, and more, all while supporting sobriety.

Peer Support Groups: 

  • Lead engaging peer support groups with a focus on addiction recovery. You'll curate topics based on the needs of clients in your assigned houses.

Collaboration with House Managers: 

  • Work closely with House Managers to cultivate a supportive and conducive environment for recovery within our sober houses.

Clinical Partnerships: 

  • Partner with clinicians to offer empathetic, non-judgmental, and comprehensive support to clients.

    • Min. of (4) hours with clients working on individual needs.
    • Host (4) hours of groups per week, which can be (2) two-hour groups.
